Last Saturday, I went to see A Nice Indian Boy with friends. A sweet, gentle film, the kind you think you can wait to stream. But I’m so glad we didn’t. In a cinema full of strangers, we laughed together. For 90 minutes, we shared something warm and oddly human.
Then I opened my phone.
Boom. That Coldplay moment flooded my feed. You know the one.
The memes came fast. Clever, ruthless, hilarious. We were all punching up at tech bros, HR clichés and corporate culture. But beneath the laughter, there was also discomfort for the partners and the children. The people who never signed up to be part of the show.
And yet, it was a rare moment that united the world. A break from grief, war and uncertainty. A shared, ridiculous distraction. Something to hold on to together.
And just like that, a new verb was born: Coldplayed. Wrong place, wrong person, worst possible time.
But here’s what stuck with me. In the cinema, I’d just experienced the opposite.
Let’s call it ‘hot play,’ intentional presence rather than accidental exposure.
It starts with saying yes to something small. A quiet choice that lands you in exactly the right place, with the right people, at the right time.
I think about how many moments we skip because they don’t seem worth it – the local theatre production, the friend’s art opening, the book club in someone’s living room. Things that don’t feel urgent. And I get it, you’re tired, you’re busy, sometimes it’s easier to stay home.
But sometimes deep connection hides in quiet corners – offscreen, unposted, unfiltered.
You can’t hack your way into these moments, but you can choose to show up. The conversation that runs long. The gentle film that’s not trending. The laughter that doesn’t need an audience.
That’s how you hot play your life. No jumbotron required.
What small yes could you say today?
