Recently a friend took a fun photo of me tossing my hair!
Posting it on Instagram, to my surprise I discovered hashtags devoted to #hairtoss, #hairtosses, and #hairtossing.
What does this mean for storytelling? Your audience instinctively likes stories about everyday events. We have a deep, insatiable interest in other people and other people’s lives. Even the minutiae like hair tossing.
You might think your experiences are ordinary. What makes them gold for any audience is ordinary experiences are so relatable. For example, shopping at your local supermarket, sharing a meal with friends or dropping your kids off at school.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.
Your personal stories crafted from everyday experiences are like snowflake moments – unique to you, yet the experience is usually universal enough that most people can relate.
It is also comforting to know that what is your ‘obvious’ is someone else’s ‘interesting’. As writer Polly Young shares in New York Magazine, ‘I saw a co-worker pour herself a bowl of cornflakes, add milk, and microwave it for 90 seconds. I’ll think about this until the day I die’.
This kind of everyday, down-to-earth story can create magic for your listeners. Let’s hair toss to that.
